The below desperate man succumbing to the fallacious arguments that were initially presented by the Communists in Russia and Nazi Germany.  The people were desperate and pushed in to agreeing with whoever came along that had a positive spin.  This man, I believe, is desperate and although well intentioned, doesn’t really understand that legalizing this is only going to put the next drug (“harsh drug”) in to the status the marijuana enjoys today.   The cartels across the border don’t care what they deal in.  They care only about the profit.  Heroine is just as easy and cocaine is ready many forms.  The reality is that the geographies that HAVE legalized it have an increase in crime due to, what amounts to, institutionalized advertising.  The reason that the the government may WANT to make it legal is not to “make money” through taxes, but to make money through promulgation and increase of head count in UN “social” programs.  You see.  The drug and crimes associated with distribution aren’t really milking enough from you the tax payer, so now they have to go another rout. Conversely, the drug dealers aren’t making enough “just” from drugs alone.  They are multi tasking.  People trafficing seems to be where it’s at, along side the drugs.  They go hand in hand.  It’s a 2 for 1 stop.  Get your drug and a girl all at the same place.  No need to go to a few different “distributors.”  It’s a special type of Wal Mart.

The drug dealers are crippling those who are their patronage.  Yet, the victims of this brain damage are so addicted that they protect their perpetrators.

Here is another – absolutely true.  But let the “government official” pot heads tell you that the only way is to legalize it.  Why not just give up our sovereignty as a nation, because it’s too hard to keep it.  Think about it.  Isn’t it just because the fed has been  inept at the punishments and deterrents?

Michael Savage on why marijuana smokers are losers, posted with vodpod

The real reason why LAW enforcement isn’t working on drugs, is because there is no real “punishment.”  It’s more lucrative to continue the idea that the drug trade can’t be fixed, then to create a penal code with punishments and deterrents that MAKE SENSE.    Instead, the politician give politically correct lip service and g-d forbid you stand up and call them liars and inept.

California ‘High Risk’ Prisoners Wrongly Released Due to Computer Errors

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Published May 26, 2011

SACRAMENTO –  Computer errors resulted in some 450 inmates with “a high risk for violence” being wrongly released from California prisons, the Los Angeles Times reported in its Thursday edition.

On top of the 450, more than 1,000 prisoners, deemed to be at high risk of committing drug and property crimes, were also released into the community.

All the offenders were placed on “non-revocable parole” — a program that does not require them to report to parole officers. The program, which started in January 2010, was intended for inmates considered to be at low risk of reoffending.

Reviewing 200 case files of the 10,134 former inmates on non-revocable parole last July, investigators uncovered that 31 were not eligible for the program, while nine of the 31 were deemed likely to commit a violent crime.

It was estimated, using a 15 percent error rate found in the sample, that more than 450 violent prisoners were let go in the program’s first seven months.

However, the findings were disputed by prison officials who said that some of the computer glitches had since been corrected, making the margin of error eight percent, according to a report by the inspector general.

None of the wrongly-released offenders have since been placed on supervised parole or returned to jail, inspector general spokeswoman Renee Hansen said.

Authorities declined to name the concerned prisoners and would not say what crimes they had committed.

On Monday, a divided Supreme Court ordered California to reduce prison overcrowding, a decision that could force the release of tens of thousands of inmates.

Crimean Coast – Tatars building mosque in Ukraine – Simferopol

February 19, 2011

This is an EXTREMELY important coast.

It this FALLS to the MUSLIMS, then Russia can be subdued entirely by them.

If this region falls, then there will be no real way to bottle neck the Muslims from a direct assault on Europe.   They have tried this route before, in like the 1700’s, but the Hungarians, Greece and Austria stopped them.  Not quite the same but similar enough to make this work.

Crimean Tatars Gain Support In Building Mosque

February 19, 2011
SIMFEROPOL — The Crimean Tatar Medjlis has expressed support for the Simferopol city council’s decision to allow a mosque to be built in the Ukrainian peninsula’s capital, RFE/RL’s Ukrainian Service reports.

Ali Khamzin, the director of the Medjlis’s department for international relations, said on February 18 the decision by the city council “is a positive decision from those who have, in fact, been our enemies.”

The Medjlis is the ruling body of the Crimean Tatars.

The Simferopol mosque has been a point of contention since 2004, when the Simferopol city council first gave the Crimean Tatars permission to build the mosque on a plot of land leased for 25 years, only to ban construction soon after.

The Crimean Tatar community has been engaged in various lawsuits regarding the mosque issue, and has won all of the cases. The decision by the city council on February 16 grants the Tatar community ownership of the land in perpetuity.

The decision was strongly supported by the new prime minister of Crimea, Vasyl Dzharty. He told RFE/RL he was confident the necessary paperwork would be done quickly and the next Simferopol city council session will grant the Tatars permission to begin construction.

The Tatars were previously denied various zoning, sanitary, and water department approvals for the construction of the mosque, despite the fact that the other buildings had been erected near the site designated for the mosque.

But in becoming de facto owners of the land, Dzharty said the necessary approvals will be granted much faster, a process that he has guaranteed to expedite.

UK – Obama Traitor to US for trading British INFORMATION to Russia – The Conservative Congressional “Leaders” need to pony up and address this to Congress. TREASON!

Why is Russia interested in British capabilities?

Does the Espionage Act belong here?

Barack INSANE Obama (MY daughters name for him) has betrayed the allies of the US for what?  Why is he doing this?

The British and the US are allies.  That’s the special relationship.  We have much in common.  The US has the same basic Religious value.  The same language.  There is much in common.

Obama betrays the Brits to the Russians, can the special relationship survive?

February 5th, 2011 3:00 pm ET

Documents released by Wikileaks suggest that President Obama traded British nuclear secrets to the Russians in exchange for Russian agreement to the new START treaty.    The UK’s Daily Telegraph is reporting that the US asked the UK for permission to reveal some of this nuclear information in 2009 but the British refused.  It appears the Obama administration may have provided the information to the Russians anyway.  This incident raises fresh questions regarding the decades long “special relationship” between the US and UK, a relationship which has served as the foundation for the defense of the western way of life for generations.

Nuclear Missiles

The British government opted for the Trident nuclear weapons system because it estimated it could kill up to 10 million Russians and inflict "unacceptable damage" on the former Soviet Union, according to secret Whitehall documents written in the 1970s. The macabre calculations that underpinned the decision in 1980 to replace Polaris nuclear missiles with Trident have been revealed by a Ministry of Defence memo, marked "personal and top secret". In a nuclear war, Britain would have had to be prepared "to finish what we start", it said.

The special relationship began to strain shortly after President Obama’s election.  He famously returned a bust of celebrated British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.  Churchill rallied the world against the Nazi and Soviet threats and was instrumental in helping the US shape the cold war policy of Soviet Containment.  Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair had presented the bust to President George W. Bush after the 9/11 attacks as a symbol of solidarity between the two countries.  President Obama decided he didn’t want it.

The UK Telegraph has a list of the top ten insults perpetrated against the United Kingdom by President Obama.  Highlights include when a senior diplomat appeared to dismiss the special relationship, and when Obama suggested the US would remain neutral in any future conflict between the UK and Argentina over the Falkland Islands, sovereign British territory.  Papers in the UK have also not forgotten when the Brits were told that President Obama was “too tired” to provide Prime Minister Gordon Brown with a proper welcome.

The United Kingdom has stood with United States as a faithful and reliable ally for almost a century.  Through the struggles of both world wars, the Cold War, conflicts in Asia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Iraq again, the US has had no better ally in the world.  We share a common heritage, similar cultures and similar outlooks.  Indeed, taken as whole, Great Britain and her former colonies such as Canada, Australia and India, have formed the core of our struggles against totalitarianism and extremism around the world.

WikiLeaks cables: US agrees to tell Russia Britain’s nuclear secrets

The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.By Matthew Moore, Gordon Rayner and Christopher Hope9:25PM GMT 04 Feb 2011

HMS Vanguard is Britain's lead Trident-armed submarine. The US, under a nuclear deal, has agreed to give the Kremlin the serial numbers of the missiles it gives Britain Photo: TAM MACDONALD

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website.

Details of the behind-the-scenes talks are contained in more than 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, including almost 800 sent from the London Embassy, which are published online today. The documents also show that:

• America spied on Foreign Office ministers by gathering gossip on their private lives and professional relationships.

• Intelligence-sharing arrangements with the US became strained after the controversy over Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee who sued the Government over his alleged torture.

• David Miliband disowned the Duchess of York by saying she could not “be controlled” after she made an undercover TV documentary.

• Tens of millions of pounds of overseas aid was stolen and spent on plasma televisions and luxury goods by corrupt regimes.

A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal.

Although the treaty was not supposed to have any impact on Britain, the leaked cables show that Russia used the talks to demand more information about the UK’s Trident missiles, which are manufactured and maintained in the US.

Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain.

Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.”

Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.”

While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal.

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8304654/WikiLeaks-cables-US-agrees-to-tell-Russia-Britains-nuclear-secrets.html#

Why the administration seems to take our relationship with such a staunch ally so lightly is unknown.  Theories abound, many of which are not worth delving into here.  What is known is that the UK is beginning to understand they may no longer have a reliable friend in D.C.  Many around the world are whispering that the US may no longer be a reliable ally and US security guarantees, along with their deterrent effect, may soon become worthless.

This is not a question of whether the US can or should play the role of “globocop”; it is a question of US credibility and understanding our national interests.  If we continue to alienate our closest and best allies in an attempt to appease our enemies, we may find ourselves abandoned in our time of greatest need.

Obama sells out U.K. to Russia despite his popularity there:

In news certain to shock the United Kingdom, where President Obama is popular, every Trident missile supplied to Britain by the U.S. will be known to Russia as part of Obama's arms control deal, according to information obtained by Wikileaks. Most galling is the willingness of U.S. negotiators, and thus President Obama, to use Britain to secure the support of Russia for an arms control treaty that puts America at a disadvantage. In fact, Britain has up until this moment had very strong sentiments for Obama. During the 2008 election, a British poll found that 53 percent felt certain Obama would make the best president: Barack Obama is overwhelmingly Britain's choice to be the next US president, five times more popular than his Republican rival, John McCain, a Guardian/ICM poll shows today. Carried out ahead of the Democratic candidate's visit to Britain next week, the poll reveals that 53% feel certain he would make the best president, with only 11% favouring McCain; 36% declined to express an opinion. There wasn't much question from region to region either: The survey, carried out late last week, found that Obama's support is strongest among male voters - 57% of whom want him to be president. There are small regional variations in support: 50% back him in the south-east, against 57% in the north of England. But overall enthusiasm for an Obama presidency is solid across people of all ages and backgrounds. Unlike the US, there is no evidence of young Britons being keener on Obama than older people. Even an article in the Daily Mail in December still boosted for Obama, headlined, "Finally something to smile about: Obama's popularity is on the rise as Sarah Palin's takes a tumble." And the London Times reported in July 2009 that British support for the U.S. following Obama's election was up 16 points from the previous year, at 70 percent: Europeans have grown fonder of the US since Barack Obama became President, but Israeli affections have cooled and the Muslim world has barely noticed the new man in the White House. These are the findings of a global opinion survey published by the Pew Research Centre yesterday. The poll found the biggest change in mood in Western Europe. In Britain and most European countries, sentiment towards the US has returned to levels not seen since before the Administration of George W. Bush. The French love America, with 75 per cent pronouncing themselves favourably disposed towards the US. Britain rings in second with nearly 70 per cent, up 16 points since last year. Moscow airport bombings: aftermath of Domodedovo blast

January 24, 2011

Hmm.  They were WARNED?  They didn’t catch it?

This is Russia we are talking about.

I’m not buying this.  They are deliberately trying to make themselves look like “one of us” the victims of attacks.  They have to have something very big.  Looks like this one is close.

I’m not saying that I think that they rigged the bomb.  Russian tactics, however, don’t remove that possibility from being plausible.

Let’s also not forget that PUTIN was KGB.

This is not incompetence, of that I’m sure.

They are in need of a few memorials of their own, if they are going to have any say in the politics of IRAN.

Moscow airport attack: Russian authorities were warned about a terrorist attack

The Russian security services had been tipped off that a terrorist attack was planned at a Moscow airport a week before the suicide bombing.

By Duncan Gardham, Securty Correspondent 7:25PM GMT 24 Jan 2011

According to reports, the warning even gave details of precisely where the bomb would be planted and yet the authorities failed to stop the attack at the country’s busiest airport.

“The special services had received information that an act of terror would be carried out at one of the Moscow airports,” a security source told the RIA Novosti news agency.

“Agents were seeking three suspects but they managed to access the territory of the airport, witness the explosion which their accomplice carried out and then leave the airport,” the source said.

Another airport security source said: “A tip-off with a warning that something was being prepared appeared one week before the explosion. Even the place, by the customs, was named,” according to the website Lifenews.ru, which has close links with FSB, Russia’s security service.

Спецслужбы знали о теракте за неделю

Intelligence agencies knew about the terrorist attack last week

A few days before the explosion of airport security became aware of the impending explosion.

The Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, admitted that security regulations were not being properly followed even though Domodedovo airport boasts some of the most hi-tech scanning equipment in the world

“What happened indicates that far from all the laws that need to be working are being used correctly,” he said.

The blast took place in the “meet and greet” area of the international arrivals hall where passengers are met after they pass through customs control.

A spokesman for the airport confirmed it was a “free access zone” that does not require a boarding pass to enter.

However, the airport does have a series of metal detectors on the entrance to the arrivals hall to scan people who are there to meet relatives. These are not always operational.

The blast will damage Russia’s international image as it gears up to hold two major sporting events, the Winter Olympics in 2014 and the 2018 Football World Cup.

Domodedovo Airport is Russia’s largest airport in terms of passenger numbers and serves international airlines including British Airways, Lufthansa and Swiss Air.

In all, 77 airlines offer regular flights to Domodedovo, flying on 241 international and national routes, and there are five flights from Britain each day.

Built in 1964, it is located 26 miles (42 kilometers) southeast of the center of Moscow and is the largest of the three major airports that serve the Russian capital, serving over 22 million people last year.

It is generally regarded as Moscow’s most up-to-date airport, but its security procedures have been called into question.

In 2004, two suicide bombers were able to board planes at Domodedovo by buying tickets illegally from airport personnel.

The female suicide bombers, Chechen separatists, blew themselves up in mid-air, killing all 90 people aboard the two flights.

Philip Baum, editor of Aviation Security International, said airports have been aware that they could be the subject of attacks since the 1970s.

He cited the example of Tel Aviv airport, where 26 people were killed in an attack in 1972 using guns and hand grenades, which has a series of check points starting 3km from the terminal.

“The problem is that metal detectors and x-ray machines are not effective at detecting bombs,” Mr Baum said. “And as you ratchet up the number of checks, you have large numbers of people standing in line and the queues themselves can become targets.”

Mr Baum said that combining airports with shopping centres has made them more crowded and many have limited space so passengers and those meeting them are funneled into relatively small areas.

“It is a major challenge for airports in Europe because very few are constructed on large open sites selected for the purpose,” he added.

Russia – clashes with Muslims force calls of modesty from Orthodox priests.

Russia has been at odds with the Muslims for many a decade.

There is a sort of romanticism with the 50’s here in the US.  I don’t believe that this forced modesty is  a positive thing like it was in the actual 50’s.

Top Russian Orthodox Priest Warns Women About Rape By Men From Caucasus

Posted by John J. Xenakis Jan 21st 2011 at 4:33 pm

A top official of the Russian Orthodox Church has called for an official Russia-wide dress code for men and women.Christian Century quotes Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin as saying:

“Vulgar external appearance and vulgar behavior is a straight path to misery. To empty `one-night stands.’ To short marriages followed by rat-like divorces. To children with broken fates. To loneliness and madness. To catastrophes in life.”

Northern Caucasus -- Russia's southern provinces - Sochi 2014 logo at left is site of 2014 winter OlympicsNorthern Caucasus — Russia’s southern provinces – Sochi 2014 logo at left is site of 2014 winter Olympics

He added that a woman who is “barely wearing any clothes or is painted like a clown” in the hopes of meeting a man risks meeting a “drunk idiot” or at best a “sober idiot.”

Chaplin, a top aide to Patriarch Kirill, was responding to criticisms for statements that he made last month, in the wake of racial riots in central Moscow:

“If she wears a mini-skirt, she might provoke not only a man from the Caucasus, but a Russian as well. If she is also drunk, she is all the more likely to provoke them. If she is also actively seeking contact and is then surprised that this contact ends in rape, then she is all the more wrong.”

Chaplin’s remarks triggered the usual outrage from feminist groups, but this statement, widely interpreted as implying that Muslims from the Caucasus are more likely to rape Russian women than Russian men are, has provoked charges of racism.

The Moscow riots had resulted from surging xenophobic tensions between Orthodox Christian ethnic Russians and mostly Muslim ethnic groups from the North Caucasus (Russia’s southern provinces). They were triggered by the shooting death of a Russian football (soccer) fan during a fight between football fans and Caucasian migrants. (See“14-Dec-10 News — Medvedev warns that nationalist pogroms are destabilizing Russia.”)

The controversy over Chaplin’s statements comes after a year when Moscow’s position in its North Caucasus provinces has worsened dramatically, according to an analysis from Jamestown. The number of militant actions against Russian authorities, as well as the number of people killed, rose substantially in 2010. Moscow’s promises to invest large sums of money in the North Caucasus economy were not kept, with resulting increases in poverty and unemployment.

The dominant factor in the deterioration of Moscow’s position in the North Caucasus is the intensified armed resistance movement. While in 2009, the violence and unrest was concentrated mainly in tiny Ingushetia, according to the article, it spread to several much larger provinces in 2010.

This has been particularly true among the Circassian ethnic group, who are outraged that Russia is holding the 2014 Olympics in the Sochi resort on the Black Sea. It was a Circassian stronghold until a well-remembered genocidal battle in 1864, where Russians exterminated many Circassians and expelled the rest. (See North Caucasus Terrorism Becomes Embroiled with 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

In 2010, evidence mounted that nationalistic Circassian militant groups have become more active, bombing a train near Sochi in November. Caches of weapons have repeatedly been found in the Sochi area, and interethnic and inter-ideological tensions have been growing.

In addition to a growing insurgency, there’s also been a generational change in the ideological Islamist portion of the insurgency, according to a Russian analysis described by Paul Goble.

Moscow is losing the battle for the “hearts and minds” of the Caucasians. The middle-aged Islamists of the last decade are being supplanted by young people who are being recruited for the long term. Some 1500 young people from Dagestan alone have gone to study in foreign Muslim centers, and about 500 have already returned, according to the article.

So we see a violent confrontation building up on both sides. In Moscow, we have violent ethnic Russians targeting migrants from the Caucasus, and in the North Caucasus provinces, we have violent young militants targeting Russian authorities.

From the point of view of Generational Dynamics, this is the buildup to a major genocidal civil war. It’s somewhat comical that analysts are surprised that Moscow’s position in the North Caucasus deteriorated in 2010, since it would have been a shock if the opposite had happened. This is a trend that’s been in place for over a decade, in a region where bloody wars have been fought between Russians and Caucasians for centuries, so you can be certain that the situation will continue to deteriorate in 2011.

Returning now to Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin’s remarks about a dress code for women, this is consistent with another trend: Increased modesty in women. During a generational Awakening era (like America in the 1960s), society demands gender equality, and moves in the direction of putting individual rights above survival of the society. In a generational Crisis era, like today, society increasingly places the survival of the society and its way of life above individual rights, and men and women adopt more stereotypical gender roles. See “‘It’s going to be the 1950s all over again’” for more information.

ACLU is the beginnings of USSA – US Socialist (another word for Communist) party

January 6, 2011

The ACLU literally made way for the US Socialist party.

The infiltration begins at the philosophical level and extends to jails, politics, and infrastructural of a society.

I present here some evidence that will seem socking to some and old news to others, but none the less shocking;

The ACLU’s untold Stalinist heritage

nazi recruiting poster

Nazis Recruit Ukrainians: Here is poster calling Ukrainians to come work in Germany for the war effort. It wasn't so difficult for Ukrainians to work for Germany because they hated Stalin. Previously in 1932-33 Stalin killed off 10 million Ukrainians in the orchestrated Famine-Genocide, denying the famine and not allowing food to come in. Nazi's promised them an independent Ukraine. The posters shows the Nazi army pushing back the Reds.

Noted author Paul Kengor has unearthed declassified letters and other documents in the Soviet Comintern archives linking early leaders of the ACLU with the Communist Party.

Kengor found a May 23, 1931 letter in the archives signed by ACLU founder Roger Baldwin, written on ACLU stationery, to then American Communist Party Chairman William Z. Foster asking him to help ACLU Chairman Harry Ward with his then-upcoming trip to Stalin’s Russia.

The letter suggests Ward intended to visit the Soviet Union to find “evidence from Soviet Russia” that would undermine the capitalist profit motive.

Baldwin wrote the letter at a time when Stalin was deporting 1.8 million Ukrainian peasants to Siberia under his policy of the forced collectivization of agriculture, which resulted in the deaths of up to 10 million Ukrainians in the two years that followed.

The Ukrainian government considers this to have been an act of genocide.

Foster was a key figure in the early years of the American communist movement who belonged to the ACLU’s National Committee in the 1920s, according to FBI documents. He later wrote a book titled “Toward Soviet America” in 1932 and also testified under oath before Congress that  he opposed American democracy.

Another letter on ACLU letterhead Kengor found in the Soviet archives dated Sept. 2, 1932 asks the Communist Party of America for a schedule of Foster’s trips around the country and offers to help keep the police at bay. It also asks for the names and addresses of Communist Party representatives in the cities where Foster was speaking.

Kengor also found a flier from 1933 advertising ACLU board member Corliss Lamont as the headline speaker for “Soviet Union Day,” which its organizers hoped would “answer lies and slanders of enemies of the Soviet Union.”

The documents found their way into the Soviet archives because the Communist Party sent all of its correspondences to the Comintern in Moscow for safekeeping, according to Kengor.

KGB chief archivist Vasili Mitrokhin: Revealed great-grandmother's past

Other documents released in the 1990s by KGB defector Vasili Mitrokhin show the American Communist Party was under the Moscow’s direct control until 1989.

“These guys were advocating a regime that arguably was the biggest mass murderer in all of human history,” Kengor said. “Where is the moral authority in that?”

Kengor told The Daily Caller he found numerous other documents in the Soviet Comintern archives that also show a close relationship between the Communist Party and the ACLU.

These documents corroborate rumors that have circulated about the ACLU’s founders and early leaders dating back to the 1920s.

The ACLU would not comment on Kengor’s research, but the ACLU’s official history describes its founders as a “small group of idealists” who began the organization amid the “Palmer Raids” of late 1919 and early 1920 against “so-called radicals”.

“The problem here is what is being left out of the narrative,” Kengor said. “Palmer, who was attorney general to Woodrow Wilson, the great progressive’s progressive, understood, as did the Wilson administration, that many of these radicals were American communists who were literally devoted to the overthrow of the U.S. government and its replacement with a ‘Soviet-American republic.’

“American communists actually stated such things in their proclamations, documents, and fliers.”

Kengor catalogs many of these in his book “Dupes.”

“If you look at a lot of things about the ACLU’s early history, you will see a lot of things that are pro-communist,” Kengor said. “What I’m trying to say about this group is that from the outset was on the farthest extremes of the left.

“It was atheistic. Certain members were pro-communist, and would argue that the ACLU itself in the 1920s was pro-communist, as defined by the writings and the beliefs of its founders, key officials and board members.”

Kengor, however, does not believe today’s ACLU is communist, but he argues it still pushes its founders’ militant atheism.

Kengor said a conservative group would not receive the same sort of a pass from the press and the left were it to be discovered its founders had Nazi or fascist ties during the same time period.

Baldwin’s writings and public comments along with those of Ward, Lamont and longtime board members such as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn and John Dewey, show they looked to Soviet Russia for inspiration, according to Kengor.

“It’s not like they were outside of a bar and blurted out something stupid about the Soviets after a few drinks,” Kengor said. “These guys actually went to the Soviet Union … and came back and wrote whole books gushing about the brave new world they found in the Soviet Union.

“But [most people] don’t even know any of this stuff today.”

Baldwin was a complex figure among them because he initially sympathized with the communists in the 1920s and 1930s, but later backed away after the extent of Stalin’s evil became apparent.

He never joined the Communist Party as a formal member, but evidence shows he sympathized with the Soviet cause, Kengor said.

“The Red Web”, a 1925 book written by Justice Department official Blair Coán, describes Baldwin as having been a “red” and a communist.

Baldwin’s radicalism caught the eye of the FBI, which quoted him in a 1924 report as having said: “The right to advocate a violent revolution, assassination, and proletarian Red guard, are all clearly within scope of free speech …”

The ACLU founder traveled to Stalin’s Russia in 1927 and wrote a book titled “Liberty Under The Soviets” the following year, which defended the Lenin’s and Stalin’s repression of dissent because they “are weapons in the transition to socialism.”

Baldwin later repudiated what he wrote in this book as “naïve” in the 1950s after he became an anti-communist.

The ACLU’s founder was active in numerous pro-Soviet fronts throughout the 1930s, but experienced a change of heart following the signing of the 1939 Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, according to Robert Cottrell’s biography of Baldwin.

Baldwin pushed through a measure in 1940 banning open communists from being part of the ACLU’s National Committee that led to Ward’s resignation. Ward had served as chairman of the ACLU’s board of directors since its founding in 1920.

Ward, a Methodist minister, later penned a book in 1944 praising Stalin’s Russia for having abolished private property and for having diminished individualism in a book titled “The Soviet Spirit.”

Baldwin’s push to rid the ACLU of open communists also led to Gurley Flynn’s ouster in 1940 because of her open Communist Party membership. She would die in the Soviet Union and receive a Soviet state funeral.

Lamont, who coincidentally was 2006 Connecticut Senate candidate Ned Lamont’s uncle, clashed with Baldwin over his effort to purge the ACLU’s National Committee of known communists because he believed it was a betrayal of civil. He remained on the ACLU’s National Committee until 1951 when he resigned to protest being asked to take an anti-communist oath.

Although Lamont never formally joined the Communist Party, he was active in numerous pro-Stalin fronts throughout his ACLU tenure, such as the Friends of the Soviet Union, according to Kengor.

Lamont never acknowledged the truth behind Stalin’s atrocities, and his 1933 book, “Russia: Day By Day,” which details his 1932 trip to the Soviet Union, Lamont praises Stalin’s destruction of churches and glosses over the atrocities being committed against Ukraine’s peasants at the time of his trip.

His book also claims the communists had brought an era of “happiness” and  that “the new world of the twentieth century is the Soviet Union.”

Lamont later defended Stalin’s show trials during the Great Purge of 1938-39 and his installation of communist governments in Eastern Europe.

Kengor considers Lamont one of the worst among the ACLU’s early leaders because he never repented of his support for Stalin even after the extent of his crimes became apparent.

“The narrative today is that they were all noble liberals and progressives, but it’s never considered that they were actually pro-Soviet or pro-communist,” Kengor said. “These guys were terrible because they gave support to a totalitarian regime that arguably was the greatest mass murderer in all of human history.”
