NYC mosque opponents gather 120,000 signatures:

NEW YORK | Thu Nov 18, 2010 3:16pm EST

(Reuters) – Opponents of a planned mosque and cultural center near the site of the September 11 attacks in New York stepped up their campaign on Thursday by presenting a petition they said was signed by 120,000 Americans.

“This nationwide petition that you see right here calls upon Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other elected officials in New York to urge Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf to reverse course,” Guy Rodgers, a leader of the anti-mosque movement, told a news conference at City Hall attended by several family members of 9/11 victims.

Rodgers is Executive Director of ACT! for America, an organization that says it wants to be “a collective voice for the democratic values of Western civilization” and is opposed to “the authoritarian values of radical Islam.”

Bloomberg has strongly defended the planned center led by Rauf, even as polls show that a majority of New Yorkers and Americans opposed it.

Supporters of the center say it would promote religious tolerance and that canceling or moving the project would only fuel Islamist radicals who see the United States as an enemy of Islam.

Rosaleen Tallon, the sister of a firefighter who was killed on 9/11, said that her opposition to the mosque was a result of the attack being carried out by Muslims, rather than opposition to Islam itself.

“This attack was perpetrated by some Muslim people. Not all Muslim people, but by some Muslim people. If it had been perpetrated by some Irish people, I would not want an Irish cultural center and church placed there,” she said.

Ground Zero Mosque petition to be
delivered November 18th

Last chance to add your name to the
over 117,000 who have signed

On November 18, 2010, at 11:00 A.M., ACT! for America will hold a news conference on the steps of New York City Hall to announce the final results of our national petition opposing the Ground Zero Mosque, and to deliver the petition to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Guy Rodgers, ACT! for America Executive Director, will be making a statement to the media and then answer media questions.

If you haven’t yet signed the petition, there’s still time to do so before we close the petition in preparation for delivering it to Mayor Bloomberg on November 18th.

Also, if you live in the New York City area or plan on being in the area on November 18th, we invite and encourage you to attend the news conference. New York City Hall is located at Broadway and Park Row, and the news conference will be on the City Hall steps.

ACT! for America is proud of the role we played in educating Americans about the Ground Zero Mosque. In addition to our petition and the many emails we put out, Brigitte Gabriel did over 200 radio and television interviews between April and September.

Without question these actions helped created and propel the national groundswell that resulted in 70% of Americans being opposed to the Ground Zero Mosque.

While media coverage of this issue has died down, the opposition isn’t going away.

Your blog represents the kind of islamophobia and fear rhetoric that has the opposite effect you intend. It makes the world a more dangerous place to give into your fear and blast those who seek understanding.

  2. txlady706 says:

I present the facts. If you FEEL fear from the FACTS, then you should evaluate why you FEEL that way. My opinions are MINE. You may not tell me that I may not express them. I don’t judge issues SUBJECTIVELY, rather OBJECTIVELY. I don’t INTEND the FEAR that you are perceiving. I recognize that POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is a TOOL that is used by the people who wish to silence the debate. YOU ARE THAT PERSON. The comment has no basic argument. All your doing is calling me names. What next? Racist? Whatever!

You do realize that the sentiments and xenophobia behind the stupid Mosque thing are the same ones that fuel the bigotry against Jews, right?

  5. txlady706 says:

Again with the liberal talking points. Don’t you you a mind of your own.
    NO. It’s NOT the same.
Jews didn’t go around blowing people up and using their own kids to strap on bomb.
Your twisted logic is the product of years of brainwashing in the schools of today. TEACH yourself how to think. It’s not that hard, but don’t look to your school, because you’ll only hear the same mantra of mindlessness.
