FBI Now Defending Inviting Mustapha

I received a disturbing email this week from ACT! for America which reported that recently the FBI invited an imam named Kifah Mustapha to participate in a VIP tour of the top-secret National Counterterrorism Center.

ACT! for America’s email provided news stories (listed below) and other information, documenting that Mr. Mustapha was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial; that he has documented ties to Hamas; and that he was dismissed from the Illinois State Police chaplaincy program because he failed a police background check. All of this, yet he was allowed to tour a top-secret government facility.

– WLS (ABC affiliate, Chicago), report by Ben Bradley, 9/26/2010.
– Daily Herald column, Chuck Goudie, 9/6/2010

When ACT! for America members – and staff — called the FBI national office to inquire about this matter, many of them were told that the story about Mustapha touring the top-secret facility was “a fabrication,” a “lie”, and the like. Some were berated by FBI officials. The very next day, the FBI changed its tune, acknowledging that Mustapha was on the tour, and defending their decision to bring him into the facility.

This entire affair is deeply troubling to me. Why would the FBI invite someone like Mustapha to tour a top-secret facility? Why did FBI officials initially claim the news story that documented this was untrue – and then later admit to it? And, why did they then DEFEND allowing a person with terrorist ties into a top-secret facility? What is going on?

It is time for Congress to investigate the FBI’s Muslim outreach program to get to the bottom of these questions, and I am asking you to do what you can to make this happen. I look forward to receiving your views on this matter.

Thank you.
